Ronny Moortgat

Born in Niel in 1951, Ronny Moortgat grew up on the banks of the Scheldt near the port of Antwerp, in a family involved in shipping. Trained as a technical draughtsman, he spent six years at art school (etching, printing, painting) and combines classical precision with a personal impressionism: meticulous rigging, lively brushwork, vibrant blues and greens, and dusk and nocturne scenes in watercolour.

Beyond marine subjects, he paints landscapes, still lifes in the spirit of the Flemish masters (trained under Willem Dolphyn) and, more recently, large battle scenes from 1793-1815.

A member of the Belgian Society of Maritime Artists since 1995 and an Associate Member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists (2004), he is represented at the National Maritime Museum of Antwerp and in international private collections, and has completed commissions for the City of Hoboken, the Belgian Navy and the Port of Rotterdam.
